Our History

you have to have your
and your business in your heart"
-Thomas John Watson Sr.-

Since its formation in 1964, the Monteleone family company has achieved remarkable business growth that has propelled the company into its current role as a national market leader.

Established by brothers Ross and Reg the company grew to include family members Geoff (1966), Murray (1969), Ken (1972) and their cousin Ross Giorgio (1976).

IJF Australia started life in the suburb of Rosewater as Interior Joinery Works with a total of 3 employees. The company originally focused on domestic products, and in 1967 the business was incorporated as Interior Joinery and Furniture Pty Ltd.

The business grew and in 1969 the company relocated to Holden Hill, where it went on to become the leading domestic joinery manufacturer in SA. By 1975 the business had also established Australia’s first modular furniture system.

In 1987 the company focus was directed to the national commercial contract market. This market shift saw IJF Australia grow exponentially and it quickly out grew its Holden Hill facility.

In 1989, the manufacturing hub and headquarters moved to the renowned facility at Kilburn. It was here that IJF developed its reputation as one of the nation’s leading furniture and fit-out contractors, specialising in apartment, commercial and hospitality projects, with a client list boasting the biggest names in the Australian construction industry. With this strong national focus the company was incorporated as IJF Australia Pty Ltd in 2001.

In 2006 IJF acquired a manufacturing plant in Virginia, Queensland to accommodate for growth in the areas of South East Queensland and NSW. Our Brisbane manufacturing facility has successfully completed a number of high quality apartment, hospital, hotel and office fit outs in this time.

In 2009, IJF moved to its current headquarters and main manufacturing facility in Wingfield. This new facility was designed to meet our changing economic and client needs in a more internationally competitive market.

In 2016, IJF reconsolidated its manufacturing plants into one at its headquarters in Adelaide, with capabilities to increase manufacturing of large volumes of joinery with upgraded machinery and additional staff.

The company is still family owned with first generation shareholders Ken Monteleone and Ross Giorgio still actively dedicated to the growth and stability of IJF. Through planned succession, second generation family members David, Mark and Gary Monteleone are now shareholders, and alongside Ross and Ken are also key members of IJF’s management team.

Other family members work in various capacities within the business to ensure it retains its strong family connections.

With over 50 years of manufacturing experience and the company’s strong family focus, our history is one of success, growth and community involvement - and we look forward to maintaining a truly sustainable quality Australian organisation in the modern age.
